Don’t Let the Holidays Win!

December 19, 2018 by Robin Spires

Ready crack under the Holiday Pressure?

Mompreneurs…This one is for YOU!

Do the Holidays make you feel like you are ready to crack with the stress of getting it all done?   Well, here at the Nest the struggle is real!

Balancing work, mom and wife life is a constant battle with Work winning…making me so exhausted that I don’t have the energy to mom and wife! Social media doesn’t help…all the perfect trees and rooms often make me feel like I’m failing.

You see…my job is perfection!  Creating the perfect holiday homes for clients, creating the perfect holiday displays for my shop, choosing the perfect products for my customers to gift.

This year I am going to try to embrace imperfection for the Holidays! Decorated Christmas that aren’t perfect, store-bought chocolate treats, presents with no elaborate handmade bows and cheap box wine in a juice glass (cause the wine glasses are all dirty).

Embrace your life and YOUR people. A wise man (Mr. Nest) once told me…”don’t let PERFECTION be the enemy of good enough!”  Blessings and happiness to you all! Remember… half licked candy canes taste the best!

Top ten reasons to love SPRING……

January 10, 2018 by Robin Spires

Top Ten Reasons to Love Spring....

Top ten reasons to love SPRING......

If you are like me, you are ready for winter to be over and Spring to arrive!  The weather in Maryland like much of the east coast has been nuts! Warm one day and 8"of snow the next. My mother bird best explained it...."It seems like winter and spring are duking it out!"  I keep telling my husband that I'm over it....it just seems that old man winter isn't listening.  If I run into him I'm sooo gonna punch him in the nose!

To make life a little more bearable around the Nest I decided to focus on the things I love most about Spring, so here goes!

1. Strawberries are in season!  I could add strawberries to just about anything... Think Bubba Gump Shrimp. Strawberry pie, strawberry smoothie, strawberry pancake....you get the idea.
Strawberry Cheesecake

2. I don't have to wear at least 3 layers to keep warm.  I just end feeling like the Pillsbury dough boy with the sweaters and coats. Yuck!

3. My spring and summer wardrobe are so much brighter than my winter clothes.  Long gone are the browns and navies. Bring on the pinks, yellows and greens!  Just kinda perks you up!

4. I splurge and myself a fab pair of sandals.  Usually from Anthropologie...they have killer shoes!  A little pricey, but once a year I just gotta go wild and throw caution and my thriftiness to the wind.

5.  I get to drink Mojitos without looking like a weirdo!  Really....it's a little odd to order a drink with lime juice and mint in the middle of winter.

6.  It starts my pedicure season.  Being a thrifty gal...I feel guilty getting a pedicure in the winter.  I love when I can officially claim it's sandal season.  Let's be honest...there's nothing better than a great pedi!

7. I start getting the itch to play in the dirt!  When my kids were younger I gardened like a mad woman!  Huge beds filled with overflowing flowers.  These days....I'm more about compact container gardens.  Small spaces that pack a punch. Eye Candy!!

8. Asparagus is in season!  Just love it and it's sooo good for you.  One true down side.  Not gonna lie, it makes your pee stink!

9. Flea Market shopping is much better in warm weather.  The vendors drag out all their goodies and fill the dirt fields of flea markets will nothing but old fashioned....yup I said it....TREASURE!!! Love the dirt, grime and scrounging through piles of cr@p!!

10. Most favorite....drumroll....I get to work outside!  Dealing with paint, fumes, chemicals and the like I hate wearing a face mask!  It sucks!!!  I have a huge driveways to I just spread out a couple of drop clothes and go to town.  I spray and brush til my little heart's content.  Gotta love it!

I'd love to hear your favorite things about Spring!!

Have a good one,
Robin

Could You Design a Room Around a Rug?

December 26, 2017 by Robin Spires

Let's get started...

A few weeks ago I was contacted by a gal named Holly from the cool site, Charish to design a room around a vintage rug.  If you haven't heard of it, you should check it out.  It's a site filled with amazing vintage furnishings and decor that can be shipped right to your house. Gotta love that!

Now...onto the project!  I was given an assortment of vintage rugs to choose from.  My pick was a turquoise over-dyed Turkish patchwork vintage carpet.  They are pretty "hot" in the market place right now, and I am DYING to buy one.  (I'm a bit of a rug junkie.) Hubby has laid down the law...no more rugs!  So, this room will have to stay in my dreams.

If you follow me, you know that I love to mix and match; keeping things fun and unexpected.  I came up with the idea of designing a room for someone who is NOT afraid of color and lives on the wild side. So with fanfare and a drum roll, I give you.......

Chairish Rug Design Project

In keeping with the theme, Global Modern I wanted to bring in colors that would compliment the turquoise rug.  My go tos were orangeand hot pink!  It's in the pillows and artwork.  Keeping the fabulous mid-century leather sofa white allows the pillows to shine, while still making sure the rug pops!  The cowhide zebra print French bergere chair and ottoman supplies texture and and reinforces the global design theme.  Hey, just sayin'....cowhide is hot, hot, hot! The inlay coffee table, with it's ivory details and warm wood tones, anchors the chair and the sofa.  The inlay design on the table gives a nod to ethnic/tribal style....oh my, just love this one.

The accessories are a blend of tradition and "swank".  Yup, I said it!  I don't think any room should be too serious!  The artwork is kept fun and colorful.  I just love the trend of gold foil in artwork going on right now.  Making sure the room doesn't get too crazy...gold and brass were brought in.  I love the clean lines of the vintage brass lamp! The brass elephant keeps with our theme and the vases add some glam.  Let's face it...fresh flowers make EVERY room better!

So there we are...Global Modern done Nest-style.  I'd love to hear what you think about it!

Have a good one,
Robin
